My life has always been split between two places and I wouldn’t want it any other way. I was born and raised in California to Mexican parents that always kept the Mexican culture alive. They brought me to Mexico every single chance of vacation time I got to come see all the family I have here. I always said I was happiest in Mexico – it is my favourite place in the world. I guess it was easy to say that since I would come during the holidays so the only thing to do here was to have fun. I knew that the fun I had here was mostly possible because I was able to communicate with everyone. I can’t imagine how different my experience would have been if I didn’t speak Spanish. Being able to express myself and understand everyone is what makes Mexico so much better. It helps one appreciate the setting so much more. Learning a language is not easy but it is definitely one of the most rewarding experiences in life. I’ve never taken my bilingual upbringing for granted, it just made me appreciate language even more. I’ve been a language student my whole life, I even chose to double major in languages at university.
This summer, I am no longer just “vacationing” in Mexico, I’m interning at a school that does what I love most – spreading the beauty of learning a language. Escuela Falcon does it the right way: they promote language and culture. Language and culture go hand in hand, it is the best way to learn and appreciate what a place has to offer.
